About Women in Information & CommunicationWomen in Information and Communication (WIC) was established on 17 May 2000 and was launched by the then Chief Minister of the ACT, Kate Carnell, on 17 May 2000. In February 2001, Kate Carnell became patron of WIC. Association AimsThe aims of the association are: To provide a forum where women in the technology and communications industry can network for mutual benefit; The Association aims over the course of each year to hold a number of events of both relevance and interest to enable quality and valuable networking. Events usually include the HOT Breakfast Series between October and April, the croquet day (WIC's answer to the ubiquitous golf day), the annual Christmas in July and other topical events throughout the year. To provide a range of activities to increase the participation of women in the technology and communication industries; In addition to providing a networking opportunity, WIC events are designed to inspire women to progress in the technology and communication industries. In addition, WIC is working with other organisations to develop forums where the industries can be promoted to women of all ages but in particular to girls in their last years of high school and at tertiary institutions who are in the process of making career decisions. To Provide a forum to develop role models of success to participate in community and school based activities to change the image of the technology and communications industry to one which is attractive to women; This is an ongoing project which will be supported by our redeveloped website containing profiles of our speakers, our events which showcase the breadth of opportunities available in the industries and our collaborative work with other organisations. To have fun!One of the most valuable aims of WIC is to ensure that members, interested associates, supporters and participants have fun. This has been and will continue to be achieved in all WIC events and activities. It is also an aim to ensure that all young women are able to assess their careers in the technology and communication forums in a true and objective fashion - with access to information, real life role models and case studies. WIC's ManagementWIC is run by volunteers who give up their time to ensure the success of the organisation. The volunteers form two groups, the board which provides overall guidance for the group and committees which carry out specific activities. The BoardThe board meets once a month to set the direction for WIC activities and manage the day-to-day running of the group. The board is comprised of a president, vice-president, treasurer, secretary and a number of board members. Nomination to the board is open to all WIC members and the election takes place each year at the AGM which is usually held in August. For more information on the current board visit the board page. CommitteesEach committee is designed to help run specific WIC activities. Membership of a committee is open to all WIC members and you can join at any time. The committees are:
