WIC in Winter Annual Dinner and Debate 2009

Thursday 6 August 2009, Top of the Cross, Southern Cross Club, Woden

The annual WIC in Winter Dinner and Debate has become a night many will not miss.. The night once again was a combination of celebration of the year past, networking, acknowledgement of achievement and humorous debate.

WIC Vice President Horrigan had the honour of announcing the WICked Woman of the Year for 2009, Nerida Gill.

The debate this year headed into murky waters of the Global Financial Crisis (GFC).

Overseen by Amanda Bresnan, Greens MLA,, the two teams battled out the argument of could women have controlled the barons of Wall Street? and finally would the world be in such a financial mess if women were in control?

For the affirmative was:

  • Shelley Oldham - Public Sector Lead Capgemini
  • Kate Lundy - Senator for the Australian Capital Territory
  • Phil Sloper - ACT Regional Manager Oracle

For the negative was:

  • Brendan Smyth - Member of the Legislative Assembly (Member for Brindabella
  • Judy Hurditch - Director Intermedium
  • Terry Moloney - Federal Director for Microsoft

It was a strong battle with quotes from Wikipedia, searches from Google, several references to Margaret Thatcher and Monica Lewinsky. However, in the end, it was determined by the audience that there would not have been a GFC if women were in charge.

The debate was followed by the traditional monster raffle with some wonderful prizes on offer.

WIC board member Maria Horrigan had the honour of announcing the WICked Woman of the Year for 2008, Melanie Kontze.

The debate this year was the very controversial notion that 'Geek is the New Black'. Overseen by past board member Pippa Hague, the two teams battled out the argument of whether it is finally cool to be a geek.

For the affirmative was:

  • Steve Longford, Managing Director, New Intelligence

  • And following the late withdrawal of Brendan Smyth MLA due to an unexpected sitting of the ACT Legislative Assembly, Lisa Robey, WIC President

For the negative was:

  • Lisa Parsons, Client Director, KAZ Group
  • Greg Farr, CIO, Department of Defence
  • Senator Kate Lundy

It was a neck and neck battle with quotes from Wikipedia, searches from Google, the rich list and even Sex and the City called in to back up the argument. However, in the end, it was determined by the audience that it isn’t cool to be a geek with the debate being awarded to the negative team.

WIC in Winter Dinner and Debate 2007

16 August 2007

The annual WIC in Winter Dinner and Debate was once again a great success.

A vibrant networking session was followed by an excellent dinner before WIC board member Maria Murphy had the honour of announcing the WICked Woman of the Year for 2007, Lynette Johns-Boast.

Following main course, the debaters took to the stage for the controversial, thought provoking and humorous debate "that technology has a positive impact on daily life". While the Chatham House Rule prevents too many of the details being reviled, the debate covered the gamut of the evolutionary imperatives of technology, family dysfunction, that technology always comes back to sex which coincided nicely with the appearance of a man in a mankini!

Under the watchful eye of our moderator, Sheryle Moon, CEO of the Australian Information Industry Association, the teams were:

For the affirmative

  • Mick Chisnall - General Manager of InTACT, the ACT Government's shared ICT service organisation
  • Kate Lundy - Senator for the Australian Capital Territory
  • Janette Vonthethoff - Director of CanberraKids.com.au

For the negative

  • Judy Hurditch - Director of Intermedium an organisation which helps companies sell to federal and state governments in Australia
  • Carsten Larsen - Chief Information Officer and General Manager Commercial Development for ActewAGL
  • Brendan Smyth - Member of the Legislative Assembly (Member for Brindabella)

Each team argued brilliantly and in the end, with cheeks sore and wiping away tears from laughing, the debate was controversially declared a draw.

The night wound up with the traditional WICked raffle draw with prizes donated by various businesses in the ACT.

WIC in Winter was proudly supported by KAZ Group.

WIC at the University Open Day

26 August 2006

As we are all aware the number of students studying IT is continuing to drop with the much quoted statistic that there are more 3rd year IT students than 1st year IT students. With this in mind, a group of WIC volunteers went to various of Canberra's University Campuses to assist in promoting the industry to potential students.

The day proved to be very valuable with WIC volunteers speaking to many young women and hopefully encouraging them to consider a career in this industry.

WIC in Winter Dinner and Debate

24 August 2006

The inaugural WIC in Winter Dinner and Debate was a great success.

The evening began with a welcome and a few pithy comments from the newly elected President, Heather McEwen, (link to speech) before the Vice President announced the winner of the WICked Woman of the Year, Dr Pei Yean Lee. Link to WIC President's SpeechPDF )

Following main course the debaters took to the stage to argue the topic that, "Women are not emotionally, intellectually or genetically disposed to work in the Information & Communications Technology industry!".

Arguing for the topic were the purple team of:

Women's Debate Team

Senator Kate Lundy

Catherine Jaktman - Vice President of the Australian Computer Society

Sheryle Moon - Director of Recruitment and Staffing Solutions for Manpower

Arguing against the topic were the orange team of:

Men's Debate Team

Senator Gary Humphries

David Lamont - Lurker, Urger and Coat-tugger

Tony Robey - Executive Chairman of Wizard Information Services

Interestingly however, all the teams ended up arguing against the topic (although the Chatham House Rule prevents any more detail being released) and even though they didn't really prove the point they were meant to the purple team won the day when a show of coloured serviettes was called for.

The night wound up with the massive lucky door prize draw with prizes donated by various businesses in the ACT.

The inaugural WIC in Winter Dinner & Debate would not have been possible without the support of Acumen Alliance.

Virginia Haussegger Luncheon

19 May 2004

When Virginia Haussegger, frustrated and angry about her own childlessness, wrote an opinion piece for The Age newspaper she could never have anticipated the Pandora's Box she was opening. By 'outing' her own personal pain and confusion Virginia unwittingly set off a heated public debate about a raft of issues including whether and/or how feminism had failed women, where it had left us when it came to having children, and whether indeed 'career women' should simply quit their whingeing and shut up about the whole damn business. After all it was their choice ... wasn't it

WIC and Dalton's Books were pleased to present Virginia Haussegger discussing her new book "Wonder Woman - the Myth of Having It All."
